Social and Educational Groups
Pacific Spirit United Church celebrates with people of ALL genders. Events that are gender-focused are open to all (trans* or cis) who identify with that gender.
1:00 – 2:30 pm, the Lounge, Memorial Centre.
Dates: October 4th, October 18th, November 1,
November 15 and November 29
Are you considering returning to the Church after some time away? Are you new to the community at Pacific Spirit? Do you have questions about faith and sometimes wonder what others believe or doubt? Are you curious about what the Bible really talks about, what today’s Church teaches, and wonder whether these things are even relevant in to you? You may be surprised at the range of understandings people have as we all consider what is important about life, and question the role of faith and religion, love and forgiveness, angels and obstacles along the way.
Please join us on alternate Friday afternoons for our new discussion group intended to experience our community in a small-group setting, to (re)discover our faith stories, and to ask as many questions as you have, all in the spirit of open, seeking conversation. Our invitation warmly extends to those new to Pacific Spirit, friends and family. As our starting point, we will be considering the work of Marcus Borg, The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith.

Fall With Paul - Video Studies
Wednesday afternoons: October 23-November 13 4:00-5:30 (4 weeks)
Join us for the first of four video studies on John Dominic Crossan’s work, The Challenge of Paul: Paul and Jesus. Each of the four weeks will have a video component, a participant’s guide, and discussion to help us learn to enter some challenging Biblical writing: the works of Paul the Apostle. Paul has been accused of writing some of the church’s most sexist and intolerant polemics, and yet some of his work is theologically challenging, hopeful, inclusive and expansive. How are we to understand it? We will have a trio of leaders to accompany us as we make our way through these sessions: Maggie Enwright, Irene Griffiths and Deborah Laing.
Come join us: open your mind, open your eyes, open your Bible.
•Session 1: An Appealing or Appalling Apostle?
•Session 2: How to Read a Pauline Letter
•Session 3: The Romanization of a Radical
•Session 4: Jewish Covenant vs. Roman Empire

Men’s Walking Group | Wednesdays | 9:00am
The Men’s Walking Group meets once a week for a walk in Pacific Spirit Park. The walking is good, but the best part is the conviviality of the group. Coffee time starts at about 10:30am, usually at UBC Golf Course. If you just want to come for coffee that is all right, too. Participants vary each week, and we encourage you to join us when you are able!
For the month of January we will start from the parking lot at Locarno beach, at the north foot of Tolmie Street. Starting the first Wednesday in February we return to our regular starting spot at 16th and Sasamat – ALWAYS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. Get on the email list for notices about possible changes by contacting Pat Burns at firstname.lastname@example.org. The walking happens rain or shine, and the walk in the woods takes an hour and a half or so. Good walking shoes for bad weather are helpful. We have an email list and encourage you to sign up to receive reminders. Or just show up any Wednesday!
