Worship using word, image, symbol, gesture and prayer opens us to the Holy. At Pacific Spirit United Church, music from across the centuries is performed by multiple choral groups. Whether Gregorian Chant or spirituals, major choral works or electric guitar, music cracks us open in awe; the Arts as an expression of the Sacred.
Pacific Spirit United Church offers a number of ways for people in the congregation and community to engage the holy in music. From our own musical ensembles – the Chamber Choir, the Singers, Pneuma Voices, Convivia, and the Band – to the community choirs who we support and host, including the Vancouver Bach Children’s Choir, the United Voices Choir, Elektra, EnChor, and Chor Leoni – to other musical organizations. We hope that you’ll find something that interests you.
Pneuma Children and Youth Choir
Rehearsal Schedule:
Wednesdays at 4:00 pm rehearsal, followed by Open House Worship Service at 5:15
Pneuma is the young people’s music training program administered by Pacific Spirit United Church. Young people aged 5 to 18 form this dynamic choir and music training program which is made up of two critical parts: Wednesday services and weekly coaching.
The group leads the music in the weekly Wednesday worship service. Pneuma participants also receive weekly private voice coaching with professional level singers as staff. In this way, Pneuma is a full rounded training, performance, and worship program.
Pneuma draws its roots from the fundamental one on one teaching relationship found in good music schools, and combines it with careful and sensitive listening and caring for our young people’s spiritual life. We are proud of our personal relationships with the young singers, and our musical results as well.
Pneuma is the “principal choir” for the Open House Wednesday service. If you have not had an opportunity to come and be a part of an Open House service, come join on Wednesday’s at 5:15pm. You will see the energy, the enthusiasm, and the magic of the future.
If you would like more information about Pneuma, or you know of a young person who might be interested in this program, please be in touch with Bryn Nixon (bmusic@pacificspirituc.com), Pneuma’s director and Pacific Spirit United Church's Director of Music.
Chamber Choir
The Chamber Choir is Pacific Spirit United Church's lead group for our Sunday morning worship. With a great deal of skill and joy, this mix of professional and volunteer vocalists, and up-and-coming choral scholars help the congregation in its worship, both by offering a wide range of sacred choral music and by supporting the congregation in its hymn singing.
This Pacific Spirit choir is for all who like to sing a wide range of challenging sacred choral music. Because of this, music reading skills are needed in this choir. The choir sings at Sunday worship every week, as well as at other special worship services during the year.
Rehearsals are Thursdays - 7:30PM to 9:00PM, in the Choir Room (upstairs, entrance to the right of the organ console) of the Stone Church.
For more information, please contact Bryn Nixon (bmusic@pacificspirituc.com), director of the Chamber Choir and our Director of Music.
The Band
Are you an instrumentalist who would like to have fun leading congregational singing and accompanying the Singers Choir? Then this is the group for you! Join with others – some newer to playing, some who have a great deal of musical experience – and have a great time helping the congregation feel the beat! Some basic music reading skills are needed to learn the music, but we’re willing to help.
The Band plays 2 or 3 Sundays a month.
Rehearsals are on SCHEDULED SATURDAYS |
4:30pm – 6:00pm, in the Sanctuary of the Stone Church at W. 45th Ave and Yew St.
For more information about The Band – and to find out which Saturdays we’ll be meeting – please contact our Director of Music Bryn Nixon (bmusic@pacificspirituc.com).
